Born in 1924, Leila Rayner went to Eastern School from the age of five. She was taught reading and writing, and remembers reciting poetry in class. She was very sporty and played one game that involved walking with flowerpots on her feet! She also remembers how close the railway line ran to the building; they could always tell if it was a passenger train or a coal train because the passenger trains were faster.
Listen to Leila talking about learning Welsh at Eastern School, and the role played by the only pupil with a watch.
Garfield Griffiths was born in 1948, grew up in Taibach and attended Eastern School. Although disappointed about not passing his 11-plus, he realised how valuable his time at Eastern was. He went on to a successful career as a nurse and university lecturer.

Listen to Garfield talking about the benefits of attending a secondary modern and the quality of the teaching at Eastern School.
Sarah Rees was born in 1975 and was a member of Aberavon Brownies and Guides. From the age of about 11, Sarah took part in the gang shows that were held at Taibach Community Education Centre every February alongside other local Brownie and Guide groups.
Listen to Sarah talk about the night of a gang show performance.
